Mr Whittaker

Thirty-five years ago, Mr. Whittaker took a bold step by purchasing a hardware store in the quaint community of Mōkau. As he began the process of setting up shop, he stumbled upon a treasure trove hidden behind the drawers he was meticulously cleaning out. There, nestled within the clutter, he found an array of documents, photographs, and memorabilia that told stories of the area's history and its past inhabitants.

Recognizing the significance of these artifacts, Mr. Whittaker decided to showcase them by pinning them to the walls of his hardware store. What began as a small, personal endeavor quickly captured the attention and interest of his customers. Visitors to the store were intrigued by the tales these documents unraveled, and they began to contribute to the collection by bringing in their own photographs and historical items, eager to share their stories and preserve the community's heritage.

This organic growth marked the beginning of what would blossom into an impressive and diverse collection that spans decades. Over the years, Mr. Whittaker's passion for history and community preservation transformed the humble hardware store into a warm and inviting space that celebrated Mōkau and it's rich past. The walls once filled with tools and supplies began to tell stories of resilience, connection, and the everyday lives of the local people.

As time passed, this grassroots initiative flourished into a well-respected museum that now houses a remarkable array of artifacts, documents, and photographs from various eras. Today, visitors can explore an extensive collection that reflects not only the history of Mōkau but also the broader narratives of the region. Each item is a window into the past, telling stories of the early settlers, cultural heritage, and significant events that shaped the community.

Mr. Whittaker’s journey—from hardware store owner to custodian of local history—serves as a testament to the power of curiosity and community engagement. The museum stands today as a vibrant hub for education and discovery, inviting people of all ages to explore the Mōkau legacy. Through exhibits, interactive activities, and ongoing community contributions, the spirit of sharing and preserving history continues to thrive within these refurbished walls. Whether you're a local resident or a visitor, you are warmly invited to step into this wonderful collection and uncover the fascinating stories that await you.
